Root canal therapy
When decay or a crack reaches the nerve, a root canal clears the infection, prevents further complications, and allows your natural tooth to be kept for years to come. It has a reputation it no longer deserves.
Signs you may need one
- Severe tooth pain while chewing or biting
- Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold
- A tooth that is darkening or discolouring
- Swelling or tenderness in the gums near the tooth
Left alone, the infection can spread into the surrounding bone — at which point the tooth usually has to come out.
What the treatment involves
Access
The crown of the tooth is opened to reach the infected pulp.
Removal
The pulp and nerve are removed with specialised instruments.
Cleaning
The canals are cleaned and disinfected thoroughly.
Restoration
A permanent filling or a crown finishes the tooth. Some cases are done in one visit; others need a temporary filling in between.
Afterwards
Root canal treatment has a high success rate and saves teeth that would otherwise need extracting. A restored tooth functions like your natural tooth and, cared for properly, can last a lifetime.
