Dental inlays and onlays

Inlays and onlays are custom restorations for back teeth with mild to moderate damage. They are often preferred over a full crown because they keep more of your own tooth.

The difference between them

Inlays
Repair the central portion of a damaged or decayed tooth. The inlay is bonded to the inner surface, filling the space without extending to the cusps.
Onlays
Cover a larger area, including one or more cusps — for damage that extends beyond the centre of the tooth.

We use porcelain, composite resin, and sometimes gold, for restorations that are both durable and natural-looking.

Why they are worth it

Natural look

Matched to the colour of your own teeth, so they are effectively invisible next to traditional metal fillings.

A stable fit

Unlike metal fillings they do not expand and contract with temperature, which means less sensitivity.

Long lasting

With proper care they can last up to thirty years.

Conservative

Minimal removal of the tooth surface, preserving as much healthy structure as possible.

Two visits

Examination and impressions

Dr. Mac examines the tooth and takes precise impressions, which go to a specialist laboratory. A temporary restoration protects the tooth in the meantime.

Fitting

The temporary is removed and the permanent inlay or onlay is fitted and adjusted for comfort and a correct bite.
