A deeper look at your smile

The Academy of General Dentistry recommends an exam twice a year for every patient. Regular checkups play a vital role in detecting potential issues early, while they are still small and inexpensive to fix.

How the exam works

Using mouth mirrors, dental instruments and high-intensity lights, we inspect the teeth and gums thoroughly — not just where you feel something.

What we check

Medical history
Conditions such as diabetes and autoimmune disease change what your mouth needs, so we review your health before we review your teeth.
Tooth decay
Cracks, chips and decay that need attention now, and the early signs of ones that will need attention later.
Oral cancer screening
Early detection is crucial when it comes to oral cancer. We examine the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat and gums.
Gum disease
Signs of periodontal disease, and the health of the bone surrounding your teeth.
Existing restorations
Fillings, crowns and bridges you already have, checked for wear, leaks and fit.

X-rays, and how often

Bitewing x-rays are typically taken once a year. Panoramic x-rays, which show the whole jaw, are usually recommended every three to five years. Both find problems that a visual exam cannot reach — decay between teeth, bone loss, and teeth that have not come through yet.

A dental exam supports more than your teeth. Some of the first signs of a systemic health problem show up in the mouth, which is one more reason not to skip a routine visit.
