Dental crowns that protect and strengthen

When a tooth is severely damaged or decayed, a filling may not be enough to restore its strength. A crown — also called a cap — is a custom-made restoration that fully encases the visible part of the tooth, reinforcing its structure and improving how it looks.

When a crown is the answer

  • Strengthening teeth that are cracked, fractured or badly worn down
  • Restoring teeth with large cavities that cannot be repaired with a filling
  • Protecting a tooth after root canal treatment
  • Improving the appearance of a discoloured or misshapen tooth
  • Supporting a dental bridge that replaces a missing tooth

Crowns can be made from porcelain, metal, or a combination. Porcelain is the popular choice because it closely resembles the look and feel of a natural tooth.

The procedure, in two visits

Preparation and impression

The tooth is reshaped so the crown will fit, and an impression is taken to create a precise mould. That goes to the dental laboratory, and a temporary crown protects the tooth in the meantime.

Placement

The temporary comes off and the permanent crown is fitted, checked against your bite, matched to the colour of the teeth around it, adjusted, then cemented into place.
