Dental cleanings, for patients of all ages
Regular dental cleanings are one of the most important factors in maintaining good oral health and hygiene — they reach the buildup in places that brushing and flossing at home will always miss.
Why every six months
Caught early
Cavities, gum disease and oral cancer are all far easier to deal with when they are found at a routine visit rather than an emergency one.
Problems prevented
Most of the expensive work we do could have been avoided by a cleaning at the right time. Prevention is the cheapest dentistry there is.
Half an hour
A cleaning takes between 30 minutes and an hour, and it is almost always painless. Twice a year is not much to give it.
What happens in the chair
A trained hygienist does the cleaning. Dr. Mac examines afterwards.
Scaling
Plaque and tartar are removed with hand or electric scalers, including from the pockets around the gumline where it collects.
Polishing
Polishing and buffing follows, using heads of different sizes so the finish suits your teeth rather than a standard setting.
The exam
Dr. Mac checks what the hygienist found, and tells you plainly whether anything needs doing or whether you are fine until next time.
If it has been a few years
Plenty of our patients come back after a long gap, and the most common thing they say is that they were embarrassed to. You will not get a lecture here. The hygienist starts where your teeth actually are, and if that takes more than one visit, it takes more than one visit.
