Dental bridges

A missing tooth affects more than your smile — it changes your bite, your oral health and often your confidence. A bridge fills the gap by anchoring a custom false tooth, called a pontic, between your natural teeth.

What a bridge is

A bridge consists of one or more false teeth held in place by the natural teeth on either side of the gap. Crowns are usually placed on those adjacent teeth to act as supports.

Left unfilled, a gap lets the neighbouring teeth drift, which changes the bite and can bring jaw pain and difficulty chewing with it. Each bridge is made to match the shape, size and colour of your existing teeth.

Three types

Traditional fixed bridge
The most common. Crowns on the two teeth either side of the gap with a pontic between them, usually porcelain fused to metal or a high-strength ceramic.
Cantilever bridge
Used when there is only one tooth next to the gap. Less common, but a good option where biting pressure is lighter, such as the front teeth.
Resin-bonded bridge
Also called a Maryland bridge. A metal or porcelain framework bonded to the back of the adjacent teeth — conservative, and often used at the front.

The process, in two visits

Preparation and impressions

The neighbouring teeth are gently reshaped for the crowns, impressions are taken for an exact fit, and a temporary bridge protects the teeth and gums while the permanent one is made.

Final placement

The temporary comes out and the custom bridge is fitted, adjusted and bonded into place. Occasionally a further visit is needed for minor adjustments.
